Chinese New Year 2018

Happy Chinese New Year 2018! The Year of the Dog. With the new year, comes superstitions that will apparently dictate how the next twelve months will play out for each of us.

On the first day of the year there are certain things we must avoid. Handling sharp objects like scissors, doing laundry and sweeping the floors are among them. Parents should keep children as happy as possible or avoid their crying children as they can also be a bad omen.

According to Chinese superstition doing any of these activities on the first day of the Chinese New Year can lead to bad luck for the entire coming year. However, this is just on day 1. 2018 is the Year of the Dog, which is an animal which symbolises luck.

When is Chinese New Year?

Celebrations begin on the new moon anytime between 21 January and 20 February. February 16, 2018 kicks off the celebrations this year. This is when the Year of the Dog begins. It will end on 4 February 2019, when the Year of the Pig begins.

In China the new year is also known as the Spring Festival. In many places festivities begin the day before and continue until the Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the new year

The Chinese Zodiac

There are 12 blocks (houses) in the Chinese zodiac, just like its western counterpart. The main difference is that each house (sign) has a longer length of time (1 year) instead of just 1 month. Each sign is characterised by one of 12 animals

Dog Characteristics

Those born in the Year of the Dog (2018, 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970) are considered honest and loyal just like the family pet. If you are born under the sign of the dog you are helpful and you have integrity but you are not so good at communicating and may appear stubborn.

An Ancient Folk Story

An ancient Chinese folk story says that Jade Emperor called 13 animals to a meeting. At the meeting it was announced that there would be a race. The years on the calendar would be named according to the order the animals arrived. ‘The Great Race’ then happened.

In first place came the rate, who travelled on the back of the ox. At the finish line it jumped off to win first place. Stopping for a snack and siesta, the pig arrived last. The cat never made it to the end because it drowned in competition, hence on 12 animals in the zodiac.
